A shooting at Charles Young Park in downtown Lexington on Saturday evening, August 15, 2026, left one person dead and four others injured, including two children, authorities said.
Lexington police responded shortly before 7 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire at the park. Officers arrived and found five shooting victims. One victim was transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead, while the other four victims were reported to have non-life-threatening injuries.
Police Chief Lawrence Weathers said two of the injured victims were children, ages 4 and 14. Two adults were also wounded in the shooting. Authorities have not released the identity of the person who died or the injured victims.
The shooting occurred while an outdoor community event was taking place at the park. The violence prompted a major police response, with additional officers called in as authorities secured the area and began investigating. Local reports said the city activated an emergency mobilization plan and instructed all third-shift officers to report for duty.
The incident also occurred roughly a mile from a Kentucky Democratic Party event where Gov. Andy Beshear was speaking. Beshear paused his remarks to inform those attending that a shooting had taken place nearby.
Lexington Shooting Investigation
Police have not released information identifying a suspect, and authorities have not announced any arrests in connection with the shooting. Chief Weathers said he did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the public, while urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact police.
The circumstances that led to the gunfire remain under investigation. Authorities have not publicly established what prompted the shooting or identified a motive.
The tragedy has shaken residents, particularly because the shooting occurred during a community gathering where families and children were present. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as people sought safety after the gunfire erupted.
