Donnell Neal, affectionately known to many as “Mr. Neal,” passed away on Monday, August 10, 2026, at the age of 72, leaving behind a grieving family, church community and countless friends who will remember him for his laughter, wisdom, talent and generosity.
Born on July 24, 1954, Donnell was the beloved son of the late Rufus John Frank and Versie McAdams. Throughout his 72 years, he built a life defined by love, faith, family, service and the ability to bring joy to the people around him.
Donnell proudly served his country at Fort Bragg with the 82nd Airborne Division. The discipline, strength and courage he developed through his military service remained qualities that helped define him throughout his life.
He was also a man with remarkable natural talent. One of the memories that brought particular joy to those who knew him was his love of dancing. Even as a child, Donnell could command attention with his moves. He was known for dancing alongside the legendary James Brown, where his charisma and talent reportedly allowed him to stand out and entertain those around him.
That gift for making people smile remained part of his personality throughout his life. Whether through a story, a joke, a conversation or a dance, Donnell had a distinctive way of leaving an impression.
To many in his community, “Mr. Neal” was more than a familiar name. He was someone people could turn to for advice, encouragement and wisdom. He had a special ability to connect with people from different walks of life, offering words that were relatable and meaningful.
Faith was another important part of Donnell’s life. He faithfully served as a deacon at Elon First Baptist Church, where his commitment extended beyond spiritual service. He took great pride in caring for the church and keeping it clean and organized.
His passion for cleaning was well known among those close to him. If something needed to be cleaned, organized or taken care of, people knew they could count on Mr. Neal to make sure the job was done properly. His attention to detail reflected the care and pride he brought to everything he did.
Donnell was also passionate about sports. He was a devoted UNC basketball fan, proudly supporting the Tar Heels, while also remaining loyal to the Los Angeles Lakers and Oakland Raiders.
Before becoming a dedicated sports fan, however, Donnell was an athlete himself. He was remembered as a talented shortstop who played baseball for the Outlaws at City Park, where he left his mark through his ability and competitive spirit. He also enjoyed basketball, which he affectionately referred to as “patting the rock,” and spent time at Maco Bigalow.
Above all, family remained at the center of Donnell’s life. He shared 45 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Evelyn Neal, whom he affectionately called “his angel.” Their enduring relationship was a cherished part of his life and a testament to the love and commitment they shared.
Donnell leaves behind his wife, Evelyn Neal; his children, Michael Neal; Jermaine Neal (Kia); Dionne Neal; Mya Torain (Josh); Mariah Neal; and Jaden Neal; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Harvey.
He was preceded in death by his siblings Mary Neal, Willie Neal, Joseph Neal, Rufus Neal and William Neal.
Donnell Neal leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond the roles he held as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, deacon, veteran, athlete and friend. He was remembered as a man of character, humor, faith and wisdom whose personality could fill a room and whose absence would be deeply felt.
For those who loved him, his stories will continue to be shared, his laughter will remain in their memories and the lessons he offered will continue to guide the people he left behind.
Though his earthly journey has ended, the love Donnell gave and the lives he touched will continue through the generations that follow him.
Rest peacefully, Mr. Neal. Your wings are well deserved.
